With pleasure I can announce that I will be doing a few special variant posters for the tenth edition of Maryland Deathfest.
As some of you know, part of my roots are in Deathmetal (as founding member of bands like Disembowel and Acrostichon).
So for me personally these upcoming posters are a back to the roots thing, but with a difference.
It’s more than 20 years ago now when I did my first deathmetal artwork and my style has matured considerably.
About the festival, I attended the 2010 edition myself and had an awesome time, seeing some great old-school bands and I discovered some new ones so I ‘m honored to be part of this great event.

……..and I’ve got more deathmetal artwork news on the way so check back!
I’ll keep you posted.
I know, it sounds like April fools, but it sure isn’t! Check this:

Thanks to a post on Facebook, Acrostichon and The Gathering ran into each other.
Of course we talked a lot about the good old days, especially the ones we had at the Willem II concert hall in Den Bosch. There was a matinee gig every month (I think it was every last sunday), and we saw some great bands such as Candlemass, Morbid Angel, Death, and of course we played there as well. Those days were so much fun. We had a great nostalgic trip talking about those days. Soon we came to the conclusion we would love to do this again! As you might know our debut album “Engraved in Black” (that got the Re-issue treatment recently on Memento Mori Records) was recorded 20 years ago in 1992. The bands gathered and immediatly liked the idea to do something together. An old school Doom/Death party! The Gathering released their debut album ‘Always’ almost the same period, and our friends from Pentacle released their debut demo “Caressed by Both Sides” as well 20 years ago. Why not celebrate this?
So, grab your agenda: The Gathering, Acrostichon and Pentacle will play live together at the Willem II (now called W2) sunday afternoon 1st of april (no joke!) 2012! Like 20 years ago, Acrostichon will be headlining, The Gathering and Pentacle will be support acts.
Last but definitly not least: All profit will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

I did this painting for a very special event.
More about the event and the final flyer design will pop up here upcoming tuesday, be sure to check it out!

Poster finished guys, get busy Rockin!

This weekend was spent on drawing and painting the artwork for the upcoming european tour of the kickass package: Dixie Witch, Roadsaw and Sasquatch.
I decided to take another route and not go for the typical stonerrock “chicks and cars” or Fillmore hippie poster, but instead go for a camp but cool monster movie poster. Gotta love them giant bug movies in the 50′s. With the cars I gave it a 70′s twist.
Fortunately the bands liked the concept too so I’ve started drawing right away. It takes quite some time to stage a scene like this, with busted buildings, and such. Of course I spent way too much time on details that won’t be seen on the final poster, but what the hell. I painted it in black and white and colored it digitally. I know it’s unorthodox, but I like the flexibility. It’s a lot easier to change colors around afterwards when that’s all done digitally.
Here’s what it looks like in this stage.

The end of this month will see the release of the first ever official Pentagram DVD. I’m proud to say that it features my artwork on the cover. There’s a great package deal on the Metal Blade site for a combi of the DVD and a new shirt, also featuring my artwork.

I’m working on a couple of posters and album covers at the moment. One of them stands out for me personally. The Abomination 2011 eurotour poster. Ever since I heard the debut album in 1989 I’ve loved Paul’s music. In 1992 My band did a couple of gigs supporting Paul’s other band Master and the year after I had the honor of playing guitar in Master myself. I’ve been friends with Paul ever since. I’ve also done a few pieces of design and artwork for Master and Solutions (Another one of Paul’s projects) but I’ve never had the opportunity to do artwork for my fave Speckmann band Abomination, because of the simple fact that the band was disbanded, and a couple of years ago Dean, the guitar player of the band tragically died of MS.
Years past and now, 22 years after the debut album, the band is resurrected with session musicians to enable todays audiences to hear the great Abomination music live once again. Needless to say I’m thrilled to do this tourposter.
There’s still some work to be done but I thought it might be fun to show the work in progress. Here’s the base poster in the latest version. This isn’t a definitive verion but it gives a pretty good idea where it’s headed.
Let’s start with one that in the end wasn’t used. I did this pencil drawing for a flyer for the Sabbath Assembly show. The band chose for a more minimalistic approach, so I filed this one away.
….and here’s one of the last images I did for the backdrops of the Roadburn show of Pentagram. Speed-Painted in record time 2 days before I did the show.
Damn, I was really reaching a state of panic by then and was working like a maniac trying to get stuff finished.
I used an early nineties photo for this one.
Special thanks to Jeff Lee of Pentagram Archives, who provided me with kick ass photo’s to use as source material for this show. He was a great help. Thanks brother!
I just found out I had several stages of the sketches and painting of this piece on my photo camera.
Here’s a little animation of the making of this illustration
